Outer Banks Gift Shops: Where to Shop from Corolla to Hatteras
A town-by-town guide to Outer Banks shopping — gift shops in Corolla, Duck, Nags Head and Hatteras, what each town does best, and what to buy online instead.
Outer Banks shopping runs town by town: Corolla for wild-horse and beach gear, Duck for boutiques along the boardwalk, Kitty Hawk and Nags Head for the biggest concentration of shops and outlets, and Hatteras villages for surf shops and small galleries.
Corolla
Shopping in Corolla clusters around Timbuck II and the Currituck Club area — beach gear, wild-horse art, and toy shops for rainy days. It is the quietest shopping stretch on the northern beaches, which suits Corolla generally.
Duck
Duck is the boutique town. The village shops line both sides of Duck Road with the soundside boardwalk running behind them, so shopping here doubles as the evening walk. Expect coastal home goods, jewelry and clothing rather than souvenir racks.
Southern Shores and Kitty Hawk
Kitty Hawk is where practicality lives — groceries, hardware, surf shops and the first real cluster of stores after the bridge. Southern Shores stays residential by design, so most Southern Shores visitors shop in Kitty Hawk or Duck.
Kill Devil Hills and Nags Head
This is the densest shopping stretch on the Outer Banks: the Outer Banks Mall in Nags Head, Tanger Outlets in Nags Head, and a long run of beach shops and galleries along the Beach Road and the Bypass. If you only have one afternoon to shop, spend it here.
It is also where the airbrush-tee shops live. Fine for a rainy Tuesday, less good if you want a design that still looks right in five years.
Manteo and Roanoke Island
Downtown Manteo on the waterfront is the most walkable shopping in the region — bookstores, small galleries and gift shops in a few blocks, with the Elizabeth II across the water.
Hatteras Island and Ocracoke
Rodanthe through Hatteras village is surf-shop country, with a handful of galleries in Avon and Buxton. Ocracoke, after the ferry, has the densest and quirkiest shopping per square foot on the entire chain.
What to buy online instead
Two problems with buying everything on the trip: you are shopping in peak season crowds, and half the shops close for winter. Anything you would ship or gift later is easier to order online from a small OBX shop.
