The OBX Highway Signs: Every Town on NC-12, in Order

What the green Outer Banks highway signs actually list — every OBX town from Corolla to Ocracoke in order along NC-12, and why the sign design became the OBX icon.

Running north to south, the Outer Banks towns on and around NC-12 are Carova, Corolla, Duck, Southern Shores, Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, Nags Head, Manteo (on Roanoke Island), Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo, Avon, Buxton, Frisco, Hatteras and Ocracoke.

The towns, north to south

The green signs everyone photographs are standard NCDOT guide signs, and the reason they became the OBX icon is simple: they are the first proof you made it. Here is the order they come in.

  • Carova — four-wheel drive only, wild horses, no pavement
  • Corolla — Currituck Beach Lighthouse and the northern beaches
  • Duck — soundside boardwalk and village shops
  • Southern Shores — quiet, residential, the Wright Memorial Bridge landing
  • Kitty Hawk — groceries, surf shops, the practical town
  • Kill Devil Hills — Wright Brothers National Memorial
  • Nags Head — Jockey's Ridge, the pier, the most shopping
  • Manteo — Roanoke Island, the Lost Colony, the waterfront
  • Rodanthe, Waves and Salvo — the narrow stretch where the sound crosses the road
  • Avon — the midpoint of Hatteras Island
  • Buxton — Cape Hatteras Lighthouse and the Point
  • Frisco — soundside beaches and the quietest village
  • Hatteras — the ferry docks and the charter fleet
  • Ocracoke — a free ferry ride and sixteen undeveloped miles

Why NC-12 matters

NC-12 is the only road down the barrier islands. It floods, it gets rebuilt, it gets moved when the ocean insists. Every OBX family measures the trip in the same landmarks along it, which is why the sign lineup reads like a shared memory instead of a list of place names.

Wearing the signs home

That is why the sign design ended up on our mug, our tee and our decal set — it is the one image that means the same thing to everyone who has made the drive.
